Ap, Properly setup, a 1911 should work all the time with any quality ammo, whether it be Ball, JHP, or SWC. That said, even if a gun is properly tuned to work will all types of ammo, occasionally shooters will encounter problems not so much with bullet type, but recoil impulse. For example, many factory match 185 SWC's are loaded for accuracy vs. velocity. In these instances, the slide may be oversprung for the round, and doesn't get full travel to the rear, which can cause a mis-feed with the lighter (and shorter) round. As well, extractor tension which may work fine for a self defense round can hinder the slide from going into full battery with a lighter recoil spring. Occasionally shooters will not take these things into account when switching from one type of cartridge style to another. I was personally made aware of one SS Colt Gov't model that had gone through more than 1100 rounds of various ammunition without cleaning and with no stoppages, so they will work all the time with a variety of ammunition types, but one that doesn't needs to be analyzed to find out why it doesn''t. Merry Christmas,
