Hello all,

This will be my first (gun related) post here, very excited! I have a question regarding flattening the top of slide. Given a regular Kimber slide with factory sight dovetails already machined, if I have the slide top flattened, will the dovetails need to be re-cut? Logic would suggest that the dovetails will have to be cut, but I have heard conflicting answers depending on where the flattening will stop near the sights. Please shed some light on this for me and settle this once and for all...

P.S. What kind of a turn-around can I expect on a customization like this? Realistically speaking, if I were to ask one of the many gunsmith artists featured on this site? Thanks much!

Peter

There is more than one to flat top a slide. You can just flat the whole thing and you have to weld up and re cut the front dovetail. Or you can stop the flat just in front of the front sight then you don't have to worry about the dovetail. You can also cut the flat right up to the sight then serrate the flat running the serrations past on either side or you can stop the serrations in front of the sight in several patterns. Basically there is a lot of way to git-r-done depending on what you want some require recutting the front dovetail some don't.

As to the turn around, depends entirely on who you send it to. Could be a few days to a few months.
