Hey guys - sorry ahead of time if this is not the spot to post this, but I wanted to ask all you gentlemen a couple of questions regarding grips.

As stated earlier, I have a brand new SA mil-spec. One of the things slated for change is the grips. But I'm having some difficulty selecting some. My first choice would be Pachmayr wraps without any medallion, but these seem impossible to find. Pachmayr states they no longer make them. If anyone here has some new ones in their shop, let me know so I can possibly buy them. Second to that would be some very durable, very tactile, very black grips. I like what I hear about micarta, particularyly canvas. However, I am not fond of the Gator style - I prever straight up dbl diamond checkering. Heine posted a pic a while back on their site of an all black pistol with a mounted light - it had nice grips but I do not have a pic available. Third choice would be the grips SA puts on their OD loaded, and probably fourth choice would be some Pearce panels. Finally, the last choice would be pure asthetic, and would probably be rosewood or c. bolo.

I plan on keeping the gun black - either black park or a spray/bake. Commander hammer, beavertail, thumb safety and 3-hole long trigger, all in black, are also scheduled.

My question to you all is: considering the changes I am making and the grips I have described as preferential, what suggestions/comments can you provide? I'm completely open to them - provided the grips provide a great surface and are black (except for the wood ones ;) ). This will be a duty weapon. Please feel free to post as many pics and as much info as you can.

Thank you all for your time and consideration

JB

City,
Below is a picture of some black linen micarta grips we get made in small batches from time to time. They are the traditional double diamond style grips, and hold up very well. The picture is of a hardchromed 10mm and the second is on a stainless Colt. Just another option.

I also have a pair of smooth G-10 grips coming from Larry Davidson which should be here soon. I'll post some pictures when they arrive.

Steve - Thanks for the reply. I like those grips - and they are the pattern I'm looking for. Let me know when you get some more, cause they are definitely a strong contender.

How about Buffalo Horn from Eagle Grips? Right in your neighborhood and they can fit them to your gun. Located in Carol Stream.

Forgot to ask.....Chicago PD gonna let you carry a single action for duty? I had a friend on the force and I thought that they strictly prohibited that.

Mustang:

You are right - DAO from Sig, Berreta, S&W and Ruger for CPD. I currently do not work for the City Of Chicago - I just live there (Don't worry - my weaps live with a copper buddy in a near 'burb). I am in the final testing phases with them and another suburban PD. The 'burb authorizes SA weapons. Depending upon where I go, this weapon may be a duty gun. Either way, this 1911 is getting a custom tune-up, with emphasis on relibility and duty usage.

Sorry for sounding unclear.

Your pic does not come thru for me, so I will attempt to locate a web page for them. Thanks a lot.

CofC, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how many Chicagoland PD's authorize the 1911, esp. SWAT and NIPAS. I've met a couple hundred area coppers in the last couple years and dang near every one of them is physically fit, mentally sharp, and real serious about serving and protecting-- in short, pros all around and some real gunmen. Haven't yet met a donut-fed slouch among them; you'll be in some good company I think.

And as a tourist in Chicago 3-4 times a year, I never met a Chicago cop on the street that wasn't pleasant and professional.

Must be that good Lake Michigan water

Well, if CPD hires me it will be the Sig 226R/DAK for me. But I will never surrender my 1911!

Very, very nice weapon. I will ask only three questions:

1) Whose stocks are those, and what are they made of (manufacturer and color)

2) Is the MSH serrated just like the front strap? If it is - whose MSH is it (I like the feel of them better than 20 or 30 lpi)

3) Howz that bad heater shoot?

While I'm here anyone have any pics of the Navidrex contoured full checkered standard bottom grips on their weap? Brownell's pic sux. Steve - will your supplier cut the linen micarta in full checkered if you ask?

Thanks for the responses so far. I promise to get up some pics when it gets done.

1 - I believe Ted has the grips made up for his own guns. You can ask.

2 - The serrations on the front strap and the lanyard loop msh match. Again, it's Ted product.

3 - Haven't shot it yet. I understand it's still in Bailey's backyard photo studio/shed. But if I shoots like the other pistol I have from Ted's shop, it'll sure be one fine blaster.

You might also consider Carbon Fiber grips from Carbon Creations in double diamond. Their website is http://www.carboncreations.com with prices and other info. If you get discounts from brownells they sell them a bit cheaper. Their version of the double diamond is a bit larger than traditional, but from what I've read they will do custom orders if you just call and ask. Personally I used a pair of double diamond checkered Ebony grips from Scott Sensing at http://www.truckwithaheart.com/grips.htm. Very durable and he will make it any way you want for a reasonable price. Good luck on your search...

Guys:

Thanks for all the pics and info. I was super-stoked the other day because I was able to locate a new set of old skool Pachmayr wraps - the ones w/out the medallion or thumbrest. But I think the next set of grips I will purchase will be a set of full checkered Micarta. Steve, when that time comes I will be sending you an email or PM.

I have a local 'smith here working on my Mil-Spec. It is getting a Brown beavertail with memory pad, a Wilson MSH, and a Nowlin hammer/sear/disconnector/springs kit. The kit came from a friend and includes a 3 hole long trigger. It is also getting the throat and polish.

Which brings me to another question - refinishing. Anyone know where I can get a great deal on a very flat, very matte smooth as silk black park job? :P

I would suggest sending it to http://www.trippresearch.com for their CobraCoat finish. Unless you really want a parkerized finish, the CobraCoat will be more durable and moisture resistant.

I must report that Scott is not taking ANY work for the moment. Roughly two weeks ago I had a discussion with him by email about some custom grips I wanted for a new custom .45 I had coming. Here is a part of his response:

Unfortunately I've had to severely curtail my gripmaking due to taking a new job several months ago. At present I'm not taking new orders but I'll keep your email on file and will let you know when I can.
BUMMER!! I'm hoping that his new job slows down so I can convince him to make me a custom set of Arizon Ironwoods. Nice guy he answered promptly. I plan to periodically check back to see whether he is taking work.

That is too bad about Scott... I have a total I believe 5 pairs of Desert Ironwood grips and a few other kinds of wood grips from him and they have all been exceptional; I consider them to be on par with Hakan's grips...
