Friends, I am interested in acquiring a 10MM 1911. My local gun shop has a DE for $850.00 that seems to be in nice condition. Maybe 96+%. I would intend to have it customized including a match barrel and the usual additions, but I have been warned that due to poor fitting by Colt that they won't hold up. What can be done by gunsmithing to change this and is this a good value?
Thanks,
Marsh

With the proper funds ANYTHING can be fixed!

I have a Delta which was done by the late Brian Bilby and it is as solid as a rock and a nice tight fit. Some came from the factory just like that and others were not as good of a fit but it can be dealt with by a smith.

Get the Delta and enjoy your Zombie Killer!

Marsh:

As Jeremy pointed out a good 1911 'smith can fix anything.

The Colt 10mm's hold up just fine- that they don't is a gunshop rumor likely started by an insecure .45 ACP fan (why can't we all just get along?) circa 1987 or so- and it just won't die.

I've had some sloppy DE's and a few really well put together ones- but they all ran. The things you'll likely have done to it will make genuine improvements, but I'd be willing to bet you could put a thousand rounds of quality ammunition through the gun you're looking at without a hitch.

Marsh,

I had a blued Delta Elite that had a horriible slide to frame fit and a hammer that leaned considerably to the left. I sent it off to YOBO for a 1* Elite build. They welded and remachined the frame rails which resulted in a perfect slide to frame fit. The hammer lean was corrected by using their ignition components. The gun runs like a champ and has had zero issues. The best thing you can do to minimize wear and tear if using really hot ammo is to use the correct recoil spring/mainspring and install an EGW square firing pin stop. Hope this helps in your decision

Is it a stainless? If so, I'm interested in it if you aren't.

Take care,
Bob

Thanks for all the responses guys. I quess I'll try and get it. I hope it's not too much as this shop is notorious for being high priced and I've never priced DE's before. Just don't see that many of them.

You're in the typical price range, from what I've seen.

Marsh,

The price sounds OK to me....I saw one locally with a price of $1300. since "they're getting hard to find". I got a blue DE government model in about 1990 after a poor soul tried shooting a few rounds of Norma factory ammo through it. The DEs are a real handful with full house ammo  so most used guns haven't been shot much. I had my DE totally customized and use my own handloads.....great gun.

Is the one you're looking at blue or SS? I'm looking for a used blue.

Bob,
It's blue and the blue is completely intact. If I don't get it for some reason I will turn you on to it.
Can you tell me what you did to yours and perhaps furnish a photo?
