I just picked up a Jim Hoag 5 inch Colt Goverment 1911 A-1 with a Clark match barrel and a Clark Conp. This is my first gun with a comp. I went to the range and the comp works really well. Why don't we see more comp guns? I now need a Commander with a comp, Anyone have Officers size model with a comp? Any photos?

Thanks TJ

There are plenty of "comp" guns out there for competition and if you are particulary looking for competition guns, you might want to search in that arena. You just aren't going to find a lot of offerings of comp guns for defense/duty use, because they just aren't practical in that area. I personally wouldn't use one for a duty or defense gun.

Morris Custom and Wilson Combat make carry comp guns if you check their sites.

Ditto the previous writer's comments regarding practicality. A comp gun would likely flash-blind the shooter in low light conditions ... not good for a defense gun.

I have a Delta Elite built by the now defunct Custom Arms Co., and even
with very hot DoubleTap 10mm ammo, my muzzle flash is no greater
than any other gun I've shot, even at night...I credit the comp design.
I wouldn't want to shoot from a retention position, but if someone is that
close, I'd rather us a knife anyway...

on a defense gun i think it is a huge no no... for me anyway. if you ever try to shoot one from less than arms distance you can feel the muzzle blast... since its shooting directly at your face.

but we all know that in a defense situation that would never happen anyway, and the bad guy would stand their and let you shoot him... :) lol.. :P :P

Essentially a comp works of the pressure of the gas pushing the bullet. Since the .45 is a low perssure round, the affect of the comp is minimal compared to a .38 Super or .40 S&W. Since comp helps with recoicl the question needs to be asked: how many shots are you to take on this bad guy that you need to worry about recoil and speed of coming back on target? Looks cool, but really has not place in self-defense guns.

I agree, there is little place for comped or ported pistols in self defense. However, they can be nice in competition, plinking, hunting, and looking good.
