Or do most of you prefer the 9mm? How do the 40's hold up compared to 9's? If one was to spend hard-earned cashola customizing, I'd like to hear more on durability, accuracy, ect in this caliber.

Hey Hoser, how ya been. I have shoot a Novaks customized Hi Power, and it was pretty nice. I still prefered my customized 9 though. The 40 S&W round is just to snappy. If I want fast and light I go with the 9, if I want knock down power I go with the 45 acp. Novaks has some already customized on there web site, go to the for sale section.

I have a 40S&W and am waiting for my number to come up with Don Williams.

I love the 40. Next to the 45ACP it is my favorite round. If you reload you can set that baby up to shoot 40"s softer than 9MM's and then with a change of recoil spring carry some pretty solid SD loads. You can have the best of both worlds. The powderpuff stuff for range work is easier on the hands and certianly easier on the gun and the stiff stuff for the road.

The one thing I noticed is that the percieved recoil with the Hi-Power is very mild compared to other platforms. I don't know why but it is a real pleasure to shoot.

There was a Yost-Bonitz dual top end HiPower on here a year or so ago. It was a .40 with a spare 9mm top end re-fit to the .40 frame. A search should turn it up. It's worth finding.

Personally, I don't like the feel of the 40 HiPower compared to a 9mm. Then again, I like it the best of all the 40s I've tried. It may not have the "feel" many BHP fans are used to, but it feels better than any other 40 to me.
I think Browning did a good job on them. I have a 40 BHP, and it's the most accurate 40 I've ever shot, and may be my most accurate HiPower. Any test I've read on them, be it in a magazine, book, or Joe Blow's online opinion, they've all talked about how well they shoot.

I have two .40's in the works right now. One is about 50% and the other is not even started yet. I have been trying to nail down a HP to replace the 9MM that I sold to a customer. The first .40 got most of the machine work finishes done and I was starting on the hand work, when I got a customer looking for a HP, any caliber, that had a certain delivery time in mind. Exit .40 number one. I have another that is completely stock and unfired. I have never carried or owned a .40, so I start looking at number 2 for myself. Get another email from a customer wanting a Stronghold package in .40. Exit number 2. Will there be a number 3 in .40? Not if I get one started and a customer wants one in the same general theme as I want to build for myself.
I like HP's in any caliber, but if ballistics is a concern and you don't want to carry a 1911, then the .40 makes perfect sense. They do have a snappier recoil (DUH for me) and shoot very very well. Buy two!

OK, after a year's dormancy, I'm bringing up the 40 HP question again. I've been trying to keep from being tempted by any pistol other than 9mm, 45 acp and 10mm. BUT, another opportunity to pick up a 40 Browning HP is up again.

I have a great Yost 9mm HP, but am once again tempted. Anyone out there love their 40 or should I just stick with the 9's?

Are 40 HP's typically more accurate out of the box than their 9mm counterparts?

I don't know about typically, but the one .40 BHP I have is probably my most accurate HiPower...at least as they came from the factory.
Not that there is much difference from the best to the worst, or if it really matters since they all shoot better than what I'm capable of.

My opinion hasn't changed from a year ago. I still prefer the 9mm BHP for it's feel, but if I were absolutely required to carry a .40 it would probably be a BHP.

Well, I do have a .40 barrel for it, but it doesn't see as much use as the .357Sig barrel does. I will say, when compared to the fitted Bar Sto .357Sig barrel, the .40 factory barrel doesn't hold a candle when speaking of accuracy. I am somewhat disappointed by the accuracy of the factory barrel, it truly is like shooting 2 different guns. I will agree with Barry, I like the balance of the 9mm pistol a bit better than the .40/.357, I just wish it was possible to use the 9mm slide for the .357sig round, but that would be BHP suicide. Interesting also, I talked to Kevin at Novak's and he said they would not do a 9mm slide conversion for my .40 frame. He said I need to buy a 9mm BarSto replacement barrel instead. I asked him about just widening the ejector channel in the 9mm slide, and it seemed like he'd never heard of such a thing. If Don Williams reads this, will you do such a conversion for me? 9mm is sssooo much cheaper! Ooops can't for get the pics!

yugo guy, I've done one or two of the 9MM slide on a 40 conversions, and they work out just fine. I do have a somewhat used 9mm slide here, so if you're interested............ Best,

Hi Don,
While you're here, what's your thoughts on the 40cal HP's? How is their accuracy and durability?
