Well here it is, and I will test fire in the morning

This was my 5th project and the most fun. I guess doing these projects is why I enjoy looking at and owning a few of the fine works the master pistol smiths do here on this forum. I thought others looking at attempting to build thier own semi-custom may get some ideas. All parts were obtained from Brownell's, minus the Colt.

On this one the actual fitting required was on the barrel, safety, trigger and (a little) beavertail. Overall the pistol feels real nice with a trigger pull around 3.5+ pounds. All safety and hammer checks passed. Next it will be test fired and off to Dave Helton at D&V Custom down the road here in Washington to do the front strap and new finish.

Upgrades include: Ed Brown Match Barrel and Bushing, Wilson Combat Diamond Wood Slim Grips w/ Grip Screws and Bushings, C&S Super Match Sear, C&S Leaf spring, C&S Disconnector and C&S Hammer, C&S Series 80 Trigger Pull reduction kit, Wilson Combat Bullet Proof slide stop, extractor and extended thumb safety, Wilson Combat Beaver Tail Grip Safety, Wilson Combat Guide Rod, Wilson Combat 30 LPI Checkered Mainspring Housing, Wolff Recoil and Firing Pin Springs, Videki Match Trigger, Nowlin Extended Magazine Release, Wilson Combat Magazines and Three Dot Orange Sight Modification (can you say Dremel tool) :D

Well thats it, feedback always appreciated!
Cheers,
Ty

Congrats on your project Ty. Let us know how it shoots. What is Dave going to do to the frontstrap?

Thanks Steve,
I like the serrated front strap (So much, that I asked Ted to add it to my 1* that’s off getting hard chromed at V. Tripps), it will match up well with the serrated Diamond wood Wilson Slim Grips.

I have ordered a Ted Yost retro sight for the rear

Cheers,
Ty

Hi Steve,
Well back from the range. I ran about 300 rounds through it. No FTF or FTE, ran 3 different mags (Wilson, Chip, and LB) all perfect.

It shot to point of aim and had a nice managable amount of recoil, using 4 spot targets it shot all in the black and I was able to track comfortably from target to target.

After I get the rear sight from Ted I will give this to Dave Helton and have him do the Grey Gun-Kote finish, machine the front strap, and fine tune the ignition system for me, he builds a sweet trigger.

Overall the project is a success, now off for the finishing touches :D
Cheers,
Ty

I havent decided if I like the gunsite safety (what do you all think about this style of safety?), but the new Yost sight was a perfect addtion. Last piece to go on is the Yost-Bonitz mainspring housing....should have it next week :D (thanks Lew!)

I fired another two hundred rounds through it today without any problems. I did from the draw, double taps and lots of rapid fire with Winchester and Federal HPs.....Once I get the mainspring on it will run 200 more rounds and sign it of as fit for carry.......

Thanks Michael, Ya it shoots great too. I ended up changing the final configuration, I moved to the STI Carbon/Titanium trigger and the Gunsite low safety had to go (I just didnt like it). I included a target below, shot 10 yards without support.

Over 500 rounds with 5 differnt ammos and 4 different manufactured mags and not one failure.

Here is the final build list.

*Ed Brown Match Barrel and Bushing
*C&S Super Match Ignition System
(Sear, Leaf Spring, Disconnector, Main Spring and Hammer)
*C&S Series 80 Trigger Pull Reduction Kit
*Yost-Bonitz Retro Rear Sight
*Yost-Bonitz Custom Lanyard loop Serrated Mainspring Housing
*STI Carbon Fiber Titanium Match Trigger
*Wilson Combat Diamond Wood Slim Grips w/ Grip Screws and Bushings
*Wilson Combat Bullet Proof Slide Stop
*Wilson Combat Extractor
*Wilson Combat Ambidextrous Thumb Safety (Narrow pad)
*Wilson Combat Beaver Tail Grip Safety
*Wilson Combat Guide Rod
*Wilson Bullet Proof Firing Pin
*Ed Brown Stainless Steel Hardened Fitted Firing Pin Stop
*Wolff Recoil and Firing Pin Springs
*Nowlin Extended Magazine Release
*Orange Dot Front Sight Modification
*(2) Les Baer 8 round Magazines

Now that is the way they are supposed to shoot. Nicely done.

Colt Commander update –
I decided to put my Colt to the test tonight; I ran it in the Steel Plate Challenge up here in the NW, I was surprised that we had 35 shooters tonight. The Colt ran perfect! I actually had better times with the Colt than the Les Baer in timed qualifying (I entered two pistols). I love that Yost Sight :).

Overall I did better with the LB PII, I even took 1 out of 2 from the fastest shooter. Cant wait to get my 1*, I will probably run the Yost 1* with my Colt at the next challenge.

So, Ted how’s my pistol coming along :D

Cheers,
Ty
