This past February at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas I had a chance to preview the ignition set that is now being offered by the gents at Yost-Bonitz. During a lull in the action of looking at all the new toys Steve Bailey handed me hammer/sear/disconnect set and said “whadda’ ya’ think of theseâ€. I glanced over the parts for a minute and with my best childish smirk I replied
"yeah, they’re pretty nice". Later that day as we sat down to lunch I really got a chance to look over the parts and while I wasn’t as concerned with the quality, having already been assured of that by the parts supplier’s well-established reputation, I was very much interested with the cosmetics of the hammer. Immediately I was impressed with the traditional look of the hammer and its ovular cut out and after spending a bit of time pouring over the parts I commented to Bailey that the cosmetics of the hammer were Nastoff-esque and I wouldn’t mind owning a set once the supplier had filled the order. In the early part of April I was told that the parts were ready for sale and I immediately bought a set to play around with.
Not having an unadorned gun I barrowed a slightly tuned up Kimber from a friend of mine and after just a bit of stoning, and mind you a bit may actually be more than I did, the parts were installed. Immediately the ignition set yielded a crisp pull of 4.75# but after a little sear spring tweaking the weight dropped down to 4.25# and has remained there since. We’ve been shooting this gun regularly since April and have also done extensive dry firing and the ignition set has shown no undue wear other than some slight discoloring on the hammer that I suspect is due to the owners lack of proper maintenance. He seems to be particularly prone to perspiration and being as how the gun is his daily companion I wouldn’t be surprised if it has been subjected to moister of one kind or another on a regular basis. Both the pistols owner and I have been very pleased with the performance of the parts and at this time he doesn’t seemed to inclined to return them to me.
Like many of the best ignition sets being marketed today, the Yost-Bonitz parts are constructed of tool steel that is EDM wire cut and CMC machined. The parts are then precision ground to a gorgeous finish, the hammer is narrowed to prevent slide contact, and all parts are hardened to a RC 50-53. Not much new there... as most know that this is a tried and true way to construct a long lasting quality ignition set and it’s something knowledgeable manufactures and builders have been using for years.
There are many quality 1911 ignition components available but as with most things in life you get what you pay for and at a retail price of $105.95 these parts seem to be an
exceptionally good deal especially considering the hammer comes standard with a beautiful CNC bevel. For all of us 1911 fanatics it always nice to have another parts option and the Yost-Bonitz components do a great job giving the 1911 lover a different take on a well established hammer/sear/disconnect formula.
