Hi All,

I recently found this Stainless Colt, I bought it to be a base gun for a custom gun. What’s unusual about this gun is it’s chambered in .40 S&W.

The question is what work should I have done to it? A friend said I should do nothing, since they didn’t make very many in .40 S&W. But, what’s the fun in that? I’m having a hard time deciding, a simple clean up and reliability job, a full-house gun or something unusual? :?

So, I’m turning to the experts, what does everyone think I should have done :?: Details, Please!

Thanks,

Brian

Here's the base gun!

The first thing that comes to my mind is to rechamber, or barrel-swap to 10mm.
But that's just me.
I recently traded off my last 10mm of any sort, and must be having remorse.

Well its a nice looking gun the way it is minus the grips that is
Shoot it some see what sticks out about it what you dont like and you would like to change. And go from there. As far as collector value the only value that really matters is the one it has to you. And if your happy with it the way it is. I have never been one to keep something around hoping it will gain a buck in value. If I dont like it I change it until iam happy with it and then shoot it thats what I value.

The pistolsmiths here do everything from trigger jobs to full-house custom pistols. I think the answer you would get from most of them would be, "What do YOU want?" After all, it's your pistol. I'd suggest looking at the websites of the many 'smiths here and come up with some ideas first. Once you decide that you want a retro gun or something to compete in IDPA or IPSC with or a totally melted carry gun or whatever, then you will probably get more feedback.

Brian, I don't know how many of these were made before Colt dropped them, so don't really know if there's any possible collector value to it. Obviously, you can do any and all the stuff to this one that you can do to another Colt, but I guess the main questions is "Do I want a custom 40 caliber 1911?" Once you've answered that question I guess that the next item is what do I want to do to it? :? By the way, glad you liked the HP, and thanks for the compliments. :D

No Opinions? Not likely in this crowd

I favor the two-caliber conversion also, except for one important consideration - if you own a 10mm, what earthly use would you have for a .40? An unlimited supply of cheap or free ammo notwithstanding of course...

Is the slide caliber marked on the right side?

FWIW, The couple of times that I've hung on to something because it was in a chambering no longer offered(both were rifles), the companies turned right around and reintroduce those chamberings within a couple of years.

With the .40 being as popular as it is (for some reason!), it's something to think about.
