Being in Kalifornia really limits the types of pistols we can import as you guys may know. (and posting all those pics of cool STIs and SVIs dont help) :(

I am fairly new at these OPEN guns type modifications anwas wondering can you guys suggest any smiths who will work on an existing Para Ordnance P-14 for me?

This will probably be my only open type gun.. I need to fit a handful of small parts, mount scope, etc.

I'd hate to approach some of the smiths I am familiar with because I think most of them specialize only on carry and tactical pieces. Also I woudln't want to email (tho I think I have :p) world class smiths unknowingly  , who have a long waiting list who have little time for a small job like mine.

Thank you for your time. Do let me know what your experiences are :)

Outside of the LTW family you have guys like George Smith, Virgil Tripp, Benny Hill, Matt Gish, Matt Mclearn, Dawson, Brazos and Rich Dettlehauser who are more than capable of turning out a great open gun.

Sniperboy,

I have a Para that Dave Sams built for me. It's a 10mm, but he can do a Para in any feasible caliber, and he built the Open, Limited, Unlimited, IDPA, bullseye, and tactical guns for the Army Marksmanship Unit for quite a while. I'd say that his work is among the very best available at any price, and his ability to do pretty much anything you want is amazing. If you search my name and/or Dave Sams on this forum, you'll see many fine examples of his work.

Welcome to the forum Sniperboy!

For those that don't know him, he's as knowledgeable as they come when it comes to modern, custom knives.

And he's a damn nice guy as well! :D

Jim forgot to post Dave's website :D

He has done a number of small jobs for me over the last year. Give hin a call, he answers the phone himself and he'll stop what he's doing to talk with you.

badger, Jim, ktmmhk, Witherspoon - thanks for the welcome. I've been a lurker here for a bit but love what I see and read :) I am definitely a novice and appreciate the advice.

Jim, I have actually read your Para 10mm review (and your other reviews) already and appreciate the time and also the enthusiasm you put in your reviews. I did not know if Sams would take my modest request but I will draft up my ideas and surely drop him a line. I like what I see and moreso, Jim and Witherspoon's recommendation does put me at ease and instills confidence with Sams as a smith and as a good guy. Thanks :o

Bar sto (the barrelmakers) are now doing custom work and even making an STI hicap clone that will be california legal.

I would check them out first. They are in twenty-nine palms CA.
