A question for all the gun smiths out there, ok custom junkies as well. I am looking for a present for my birthday next year. Should I start with a base Colt, old commercial colt made in my birth year, or start with a caspian frame? Will not be use to carry but to admire and shoot.

Thanks
Bryan

I hate to scare you, but these guys are deviants...

The most popular answer..."why not all three?"

I am partial to a YoBo built Colt Commercial. Mine is almost twice as old as me!

Yes I can see that. As I look at each of pictures posted I hear myself saying "I'll take that one too!" My bank account is going to suffer this disease.

I got a Series-70 from my birth year... Unfortunately it slipped through the QC cracks (maybe like me,) it's got some awful tool marks on it. I had it worked on anyway. It's nice but not 100% reliable.

W/ a Caspian frame you can get a custom serial number (I got one of those too) it's pretty neat if you think about it.

I'll try to avoid getting too wordy with this post. My choice for a gun that will be as close to 100% right from the get-go and shot heavily will start as a Caspian receiver and slide built with the best possible internal parts and fitting to as tight of tolerances as possible. I think a bare slide with no rollmarks is just as good as it gets, and Caspian's stuff is top notch. There is a lot to be said, IMHO, for a gun that was machined to fit from the start versus one that was rebuilt. For classiness and character, nothing beats an older commercial Colt. Alas, they are hard to find and VERY expensive as base guns. I have no weak spot in my heart for series 70 or 80 Colts of any kind except Deltas, and although they are nice, especially the new 70s, they just don't do it for me like the commercial guns. The rollmarks on commercial guns of every make are really nice, and they just have that alure. I did a long response to what I thought was a ridiculous thread on another forum a while back and have put the link below. It goes over, in detail, my reasons for feeling the way I do about ALL 1911 makes.

I would probably want the Caspian just because I don't have one and I can't get the Caspian frames here in the PRK :( I'd do a Colt from my birth year but they are getting so cost prohibitive here in the PRK that to get one for a build is getting unrealistic IMO unless you get lucky and find one at a great price

Hey Bryan, since you're from Kali like myself you're a little screwed for a Caspian. They're not on the DOJ Drop List, hence, no Kali sale. As for the Colts, unless you come upon a used one for a FTF PPT you won't be able to bring them into state, that is, unless you own one already. Finally, for the current factory Colts, you can still get your hands on the Series 80 but not the Series 70 because of the DOJ Drop List again.

Good Luck!

Ummmmmmm... sounds like a good enough reason for moving East to me.

Yes learned about the drop test issues last year when i purchased a slide from caspian then learned frames not avail. Have seen some old Colts at gun shows, but nothing of interest. So it may be a series 80 as I'd rather start with a base Colt that any of the other makes. Unless ARnold can change some laws.
