I'm looking for some information from our pistol gurus:

what years did Colt chamber a factory version of the 38 Super in the 1911 Commander size?

I'm looking for one for a carry project.

Jeff, I believe they were offered from shortly after the Commander was introed in 1950 to present.

Jeff, I agree with Gary. I read the same thing somewhere not too long ago. If I remember where I read it I'll get back to you with the info.

My old brain just jump started. Look at :

http://www.sightm1911.com/

Click on "1911 History" and scroll down to "Civilian Commercial Production by Colt". He indicates that when it came out in 1950 it was in all three calibers.

There have been periods of time when no caliber but .45 was offered in the Commander. The Lightweight offered this year is, I think, the first time since '98 or '99 that you could get a Lightweight chambered in Super, except perhaps on a limited, or special-order basis.
