I have an older federal ord. Al Frame. Frame is markded 22lr,9mm, 38 45. I have been told that this frame wont hold up well. Was thinking about 9mm. Any suggestions if putting time and money into this frame.

Thanks

Bryan

If you're up for learning about the 1911, I'd say put a 9mm upper on it and shoot it with Wallyworld whitebox ammo until the frame falls apart. By then you'll know if you want to carry and/or compete with a 1911, and what you want on it.

At that point you can then buy a good frame and turn the parts over to a good 'smith (we can suggest several :) ) and tell him/her exactly what you want.

Or just start over with a .45.

Fed Ord frames had a bad reputation so I would be reluctant to put much money into it. Patrick's suggestion is a good one. Build it up and if you have problems replace the frame with one from a quality manufacturer.

Last year I used an old Caspian aluminum frame (they don't make aluminum ones any longer) and put a Kimber .22 top end on it. The Kimber slide is also made from aluminum so the pistol is very lightweight. It's fun to shoot and very accurate and I usually take it along when I introduce a new shooter to the 1911.
