It seems I have read about this somewhere. I know I have seen some pictures of black Titanium guns, but am not sure if they were coated or something else.

Is thee someone who anodizes titanium frames, and does this work - by work I mean does it either last, and or does it reduce risk of galling.

thank you

Richard

I am not sure of anyone that anodizes titanium as far was with an FFL to do guns, but Virgil Tripp of Hard Chrom fame was using some type of graphite coating for the rails to prevent galling and make them run a little smoother. I am not sure if he does it only for guns he builds or if it is something he is offering retail. Give him a call to find out for sure.

Good luck.

It is my understanding that titanium oxidizes so quickly that plating it with anything is a herculean task. Literally, by the time you walk it over from the bead-blasting hood or strip tank to the plating solution, it has oxidized enough that the plating won't give uniform coverage.

Bake-on coatings may be the only solution.

"Herculean task" to plate it, I believe it. I'm starting to think if God had meant for man to have titanium he'da given us titanium teeth or something. This stuff is a real heart breaker just to get it out of the earth and smelt. Ore gets welded into a big pressure tank, gets processed, tank is cut open and the separated ore is laboriously scraped off the tank walls (or something like that). It's like by the time you have a 3-pound block of metal you can start attempting to machine, seven workers have given their lives to creating it! No wonder it's expensive. But I read a month ago that the tsunami moved tons of Ti ore from the seabed to the shores of Indo, and people are gearing up to process it.

You can decoratively anodize Titanium with a DC current and an electrolyte bath.

Knifemakers do this frequently but the color range will be more like the prism (blue, green, yellow, purple, bronze) There are instructions online to do this yourself.

As far as plating, I have heard that T&A refinishing in Florida can plate Titanium. They do some type of acid bath to prevent flaking/peeling.

You can also get Ti, nitrided but this is very expensive.

Most people coat ti for reduction in galling and to giv it a bit harder surface finish. Ti is pretty soft.
