just wondering if any were ever made 1911 style?

a guy i know shoots a lot of comps ect. with his smith and wesson model 52. it seems like an awesome gun for some of the slow fire ppc type stuff i do.
and in turn wondering if its "easy" for one of the smiths on this board to do....

Colt made their Midrange Gold Cup model and Clark offers a conversion.

The original Midrange model later became the Mk3 with a change or two. It would probably be more accurate.

c.rod, Yeah it's not only possible, but the late Jim Clark made his rep on this very conversion back after WW II. He ran one ad in American Rifleman offering conversions to 38 spl on converted 5 in Colts made from 38 Super platforms and never looked back. By the way, did you know that Smith and Wesson used to make 38 Spl. barrels for 1911's back when? I had a customer in Calif who had one, and had me re-barrel it, as it didn't shoot as well as he wanted. Put one of Clarks barrels in it, and then converted another from 38 Super to 38 Spl for him a while later. Clark still offers barrels for them, as does Kart. Clark also offers mags for the 38 Spl. converted from Delta Elita mags, and Metalform used to, but I don't see them in their catalog now. This used to be a very popular deal when Bullseye was in vogue, but it's popularity seems to have been eclipsed somewhat by the action type of shooting. Too bad - always liked bullseye.

Hey c.rod. Everyone has a gun that they almost lay awake at night regretting having sold. Mine is exactly the gun you describe. It was built by the best, Jim Clark Sr. I sold it while trying to come up with the funds for my down payment on my first house Years ago and regretted it as soon as it drove away! They are the most pleasant, accurate guns I have ever shot and one day I will have one built as close to the one I had as possible. Go for it and I Know you won't regret it.

c.rod -

If you are interested, I know of a guy who has 5 new in box. I can't guarantee a great price or even that he'll sell him, but I'd be happy to turn you on to him. He also has a bunch of other neat NIB Colt stuff.

The first 1911 I ever fired was a Clark .38. Scary light trigger. Very accurate. Beautiful work on it.

Up until then, I had only fired revolvers and my friends S&W M39. Certainly gave me something to think about.

I built several in the 'good old days of Bullseye'. Awesome shooters.

They'd be even easier to build now, with the advent of the 10mm/40 slide. You used to have to start with a 38 Super or 9mm slide and open the breachface for the .38 Special round.

Like Don, I miss the it. The toughest handgun game ever. If you haven't tried it, give it a whirl. A very humbling experience.

Tim, Humbling is a good description. If you get pretty good at 25 yds. and think you're sumpthin', then move the paper back to 50 yds and you know how humble one can get. Can you say "OH S*&t !!?".
