I should know this but I don't. I am getting ready to buy a 1911 for my stepson who is is a lefty. I know about ambi safeties and using the trigger finger for the mag release, but is there anything special that needs to be done to the ejector etc. to keep it from ejecting empties in his face? Any other tricks I need to know?

A left handed shooter will still have the pistol basically centered in front of his face, so if he is hit by brass, a righty probably will get hit, too.

One thing to know about lefties using ambi's is to make sure that the lever's downward travel is stopped by the grip panel, rather than the torque being transmitted through both sides of the ambi. If he shoot's with his thumb on top of the safety, he'll loosen the fit of the tongue and groove joint before long.

Good Luck!

I am a southpaw and have never had brass eject back into my face. One thing I have done to all my 1911's is to have the end of the slide stop cut flush to the frame and the surrounding frame chamfered. I found the protruding silde stop gets annoying really quickly with extended range sessions. YMMV.

I am a lefty and I like King Ambi's for the strength they have with the extra contact point on the pin.

Hi,

I'm a lefty in the sense that I am legally blind in my right eye. I draw with my right hand and pull the trigger with my right hand but, I sight with my left eye.

Pistols have never bothered me but, when I was in the service the M16's would splat me on the cheek quite a bit. I think now they have left hand weapons for the military.

Gary,

From first hand experience..the M16 and the M4 still spit brass into your face, worse still down your shirt at the most inconvenient time. I finally gave up and shoot my rifles righty and after a quick swap of the mag release my M9 lefty...So if they have lefty rifles in the Army I still don’t know about it...

Jim
