I have a 1973 High Power, nice gun. 100% original. Fixed sights. Feeds HP's . WOuld that be a good base gun to get some work done? Sights, trigger, safety, checkering, refinish. A conservative carry package. What would be the cost of the work, if I send it to a reputable pistolsmith. I just want to have one , nice High Power.

AP,

No you should not use it as a base gun...you should sell it to me and get rid of it.... :D

Personally Im looking for a BHP like the one you have. If I were you, I would have it already boxed and shipped to get in line with a Top Notch smith...your certainly in the right place on LTW. You couldnt go wrong with any of them here. Good luck and Ill be looking forward to seeing pics of the finished product.

Jim

AP, There's no reason you can't use it as a nice base gun - however, I believe that the frontstrap on your gun will be a bit thin in the radii of the frontstrap for even 40 LPI checkering. There have been incidences where folks have tried that and had the frontstrap fall out after giving the frame a squeeze or two. You would be OK to go with stippling in that gun however. If you really, really need to have it checkered, I'd use a later gun, such as a MK III. Best,

Just off the top of my head ..... Don Williams and Ted Yost. You need to look at their websites and look through the Custom Pistols section here. I think you'll find the answers to your questions. Have fun!

Theo Yost works on them from time to time, as does my friend Don Williams. Check out these links for the finest products of the pistolsmiths' art:
