In general, can coned or bushingless barrels be made to shoot more accurately than a standard bushing barrel? How do they compare in general to each other?

Seems like many short barreled guns have this barrel -- Kimber and Springfield Compacts, ect.

Springfield and Kimber use the cone barrel approach not for accuracy reasons, but for those of function and durability. Seems they're a lot smarter than Colt, having been around for a lot shorter time, and had to "improve" the Commander by shortening it an impressive 1/4". The result is that the bushing required on a conventional barrel was too short, it's lug was too far against its rear edge, and a decent fit was next to impossible. Oh yeah - they broke a lot too. In law enforcement circles, things like this are often referred to as "clues" Kimber, in their defense, never tried this route, but they never tried a 4 1/4" barrel/slide combo either - woulda been nice...

Hi Ted!
Isn't the 4-1/4" barrel a Colt patent or something strange like that? It seems accuracy out of my coned barrels are not as tight as my bushing barrels.

FWIW hoser, when I'm building a bullseye gun, it's always with a bushing. Nothing wrong with a coned barrel, but I seem to be able to squeek out just a tad bit more accuracy with the bushinged one.
