Hi all,

New to this forum, didnt even know it existed. Wow. Nice place. I was told by a member of Calguns to post my question here. Said you guys would have good info on possiblities.

So here it goes. A little background and then the question.

A friend has a 1911 full size frame he bought 8 years ago and is willing to part with it because he has decided that he will never build himself a 1911 gun. So now that I will finally get a chance to build up a 1911 for myself and enjoy the process. I have a question that I cannot find readily an answer to.

I like the combat commanders. Can I take a full size frame and use a combat commander slide on it?

From reading manuals, looking at books, and not getting a straight answer in them about it. It appears the frames and slides are different. Im not sure. Schlamoo on Calguns say's YES they are different and NO you cannot use them together. Which is what I feared.

Can you guys enlighten me on this. Is it possible to do this? If its possible is it stupid to do? Too much work? Not worth it? Yada Yada Yada.

Thank you guys. I think i will now go poke around this place. Looks cool. :D

The dustcover on a commander frame is shorter than the dustcover on a government sized frame. Other than that I will defer to our experts here on whether you could put a commander slide on a full size frame.

Welcome to the best place on the internet.

Besides the dust cover, the rails are shorter and I think there is a difference in length involving the recoil guide rod impact area of the frame. A full size frame can be re cut to address these issues (recut to commander frame specs) and then a Commander length slide could be fitted and work properly.

I am sure one of the smiths here could do the needed machine work

Mark

aileron, Mark has it right. The frame rails and attendant impact area for the recoil spring guide are set back .100 to the rear compared to a Gov't model. The dust cover is also shorter by .300. Your full size frame can be cut to work properly with a Commander size slide. Hope this clarifies things for you.

Guys..... Keep in mind we live in Calif. Finding just frames are rare to say the least. Keep any input coming. I know at one time an odd company made Commander slide to fit on Govt frames but it was an odd combo that didn't work out real well. Can't remember who it was..... ?

aileron- if you live in Ca. and the frame is a quality frame like a Caspian, I'd snap it up in an instant and then build what I could with it. If it's a full size, I'd build a 5" full size 1911- Schlamoo is right, finding a frame alone is extremely rare in Ca. since in 2000 all handguns imported into the state have to be submitted for drop testing and approval.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the comments. I think I will make it full size. Just to keep it the way it was intended to be.

Of course I might change my mind. I've got some time to think about it. :)
