Jason,

Remember what I said a few hours ago about your heritage, parentage, lack of moral fiber and general poor character? I meant every word of it, Buddy....... :x

At the risk of repeating myself, THIS GUN IS MUCH TOO PRETTY TO CUT UP!! For the sake of all us folks who appreciate art for art's sake, go buy a new Series '70 or something to grind on!!!! Oh, the humanity!!!!!!

Mr. Yost, PLEASE try to talk him out of this heinous act!! He told me that you were all for it and couldn't WAIT to warm up your Dremel on this one. SAY IT ISN'T SO!!!!!!!!!!

I'd carve it up in a heartbeat. It isn't rare, it isn't historical, it's just nice, and has I'm sure over it's existence been a poor investment. That gun probably sold in the $200 range in the 60's, and is worth probably five to six times that amount today. What would 200 1968 dollars worth of IBM be worth today  ? If that $200 had been put into anything that returned 10%, it would be worth over $5600. I always have to laught at the guys that say " I can't shoot this (fill in the blank) because I'll ruin it's collector value

Get it to the point where it's everything you ever wanted, and shoot the crap out of it. That's getting a return on your investment!

And yes, I shoot the crap out of my Westley, I've almost finished wearing out a .275 Rigby, and any nice gun that has the misfortune to cross my path will suffer the same fate :P

Well, I guess that explains it prettty succinctly.... Of course, I am only saying all this because the work order for that piece of scrap iron won't have my name on it... I'll just have to keep trying to wear out my Yost OACP..... It's not a 1968 Colt Commerical, but it will do...

A .275 Rigby? Color me DEEPLY envious....

gotta say i would leave that one alone, and im not a "bone collector". If you have other options, and other customs, whey carve on something so hard to find? Pre 70 Commercial Govts. with box/papers sell for 1k up, and you can buy a NIB 70 repro for $700-$750, just as good if not better for a base pistol.

With rare exceptions custom pistols are a far worse investment than bone stock Colt Governments, especially a speciman like that. MOST customs i see that sell on the secondary market are sold at a loss.

I would build a full house gun on that one.
Not a lightly customized "retro" but a full house gun.
Yup.

Jason,

You keep tantalizing me with your incredible finds. I need to open a pawn shop up down here. Trouble is the difficulty in getting an FFL in CA, plus too much overhead. I would cut that one up in a heartbeat too. I have a beautiful 1929 Commercial that that Bailey fellow almost talked me into cutting up. There were only 1000 made that year, it is in 98% condition, and it was the year my Mom was born, so I think I should probably keep her stock. I think I am going to try and locate a WWI shooter grade Colt for this project, let me know if you come across one or a WWII, I have a C&R, so no problems getting into CA.

I agree with Ted too, guns are meant to be shot, not languish away in some climate controlled tomb. Cut it up Ted, I can't think of anyone better. That said, this gun is now part of my screensaver, along with all the customs. I definately think a retro is in order here, maybe something "Swensonesque"? Hey, I just made a new word!!!

So... Ummmmmmmm... waddaya want for it? Nice gun, Jason. I'd chop it up, too. You get kinda spoiled when you have well-built customs and go back to a factory gun. They just ain't the same. Let's all sit by the phone one day and call Colt asking for a run of old roll-marked guns. Maybe then they'd get a clue.

I'm sure the Dragon would sell well in the southern boarder states.

Which one? My Hi-Power or NRM Colt?

Ted ask for a little leeway on the Colt, that gives a whole new meaning to the words "Little Leeway"

Man, they could be reintroducing the CCO and they bring us the "Dragoon." How about a lightweight 1991A1 commander with the vericle slide serrations and no high cut.

My guess is that it's not a big hit in the hood at all, or anywhere for that matter. Check this out http://www.lewhorton.com/conitemdetail. ... mNum=45890. I do not understand what the people in marketing at Colt are thinking. We have a million people lined up in hopes of them releasing a well-made series 70 style commander, series 70 (or 80) Delta Elite, or a decent 70 super... and we get the friggin' silver dragon? I reckon the engravers are pitching a fit about having nothing to do so Colt gives them a job to produce something that no one except the most uncaring, filthy rich, die-hard Colt collector would buy.

Dear Colt,
Every night I have a dream that for Christmas 2005 I wake up to a pile of your guns. One is a 10mm, one a 38 super, and a brace of .45s rounds it out. I am in awe of the fit and finish. The 10mm is a Delta Elite in series 70 configuration. The roll marks are deep and even... perfectly centered on the slide. The super has the pre-war "Super 38 Colt" roll marks... again perfect. The .45s stand out from the pack, as they both have different roll marks, albeit very well done. One wears the 50's style government roll marks, and the other the same as a pre-war national match. On the port side of each and every one, it does not say "Government Model," but instead, in a very classy and elegant one-line manner, "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO HARTFORD CONN U.S.A." I love them all. I am going out today to buy another SET just to save one for collecting and have one built up to my specs by the world's finest pistolsmiths. Colt, you have made me a happy man. I will now die happy and be proud to carry a Colt 1911 to Heaven.

Sincerely,
~Jim Keeney

Hey, my son likes it. "Daddy! Look with your face. A monter gun! With fire!" (And yes there is no "s" in monster when he says it and you have to bring your hands to your face like claws when you say it.)

mrbieler,

That post made me want to eat my words. I love the way little kids talk... makes me wish I could get away with the same vocabulary and pronunciations. My neices and nephews have a great way of communicating. Given the fact that your son likes it, Colt should have made them a bit more affordable and on a new series 70. Unique AND functional.

Happy New Year!
