Considering building a custom 1911 with S&W rear sight (for something different), so I thought I'd see if anyone can post pix for inspiration!

Not only do I second hoser's request but am also interested in who is doing that type of work still.

The perfect sight for a retro build, if you want an adjustable :)
The only downside is that the notch is a bit shallow.

Not an easy install, and not one I do very often, but it does look right on some guns.

Could you make a deeper blade? Ted, I'm sure you've had bigger challenges that THAT! :P

BTW, is it better to keep blade from hanging off back (like the "old" days) to better protect it? Do you not use the existing rear dovetail for cosmetic or is there a practical reason?

Thanks Ted! Hopefully your photos are the first of many.

Of course I can

Back in my muscle car days, there was a popular saying ... "Speed costs - How fast do you want to go?"

Placement is a combination of appearance and function. Regardless of position, you still have to deal with the factory dovetail. I do some things a little differently - Swenson used a pin in addition to the mounting screw - good idea, but a little ugly IMO (Sorry, Jason :P ). My way allows a recoil shoulder and a larger mounting screw - no secondary pin necessary.

Oh, flashbacks to 1979! Although Ted, any gunsmith in 1979 who could have seen that install of yours would have died of envy.

Just not my cup of Retro tea. If I'm going Retro, I'll get a fixed rear blade.

I have a few but none are as nice as Teds work. Nice old school technique with a modern twist.

Does anyone here actually CARRY a gun with S&W sights or are they too snag friendly or blade too sharp?

I carried a SW with SW sights for the first 10 years of my LEO carry. We would round the ears but other than that I dont remember them snagging bad. The blades would take a beating since they werent real thick. We would replace blades every few years. I have carried a BHP with K sights off and on for the last couple of years.
