I know we pretty much all consider an ambi slide stop as an aberration and completely unnecessary, but I have a customer who wants one for a gun set up for a youngster who happens to be a lefty. I advised against it in terms of not getting him used to them, but he says the boy is actually quite handy with unmodified 1911's and they just want to try this on his game-only gun.

I'm sure somebody was making these years ago-- anybody know anything about them and where I might find one? I told the guy I'd make him one but I don't want to if I can get around it.

Ned,
I believe ambi slide stops were made by MS Safari Arms and also by Crown City Arms, both of whom are long out of business. They were both extended versions and were of pretty sad quality, if I remember correctly.
If there is anything on today's market, I don't know of it.

Ned - just tig a lever onto the right end of the slide stop pin. Then you'll never have to worry about if coming loose!

Ned, for some reason I have is stuck in my head that I saw one someone made not to long ago. If my memory is correct they just flattened the right side, drilled and tapped it and put a small notch in it. They made the right side out of bar stock. It was countersunk for the head of the screw and had a tab on the back side to go into the notch. It was just screwed to the shaft and tab kept it from spinning. Then again I could be wrong, it is Monday after all.

Ned,

I got down to Dave Sams' shop the other day, and while I was there I played with a gun he built about three months ago for a friend of mine. It was a totally ambi Caspian 45... slide stop, mag catch, safeties. Dave made the slide stop himself. It's tough, simple, and works great. If you would like to give him a call, his number is (804)375-3782. He's usually in the shop from about 6AM to 9PM. I'm sure you guys could talk about guns for a long time, as the two of you seem to think very much alike. If I get the chance this upcoming weekend, I'll try and get down to take a few pics. We looked for a few weeks to no avail before Dave decided to make one, so I'm not too sure if one is still made.

Hope this helps.

Ned, Sarco has ambi slide stops advertised in Shotgun
News Dec 10th issue. Their number for them is: C45005 and they are $14.95 or 3 for $34.95( if you have a real need for 3).
Hope that helps...........Jeff
