Just thought you all should know John Hobbs was shot on duty yesterday and passed. Those of you who know him know what a wonderful person we lost. He left behind a wife and 3 children 10, 8, and 6.

John was a Detective with Phoenix PD's Fugitive Warrant Squad. He was a great guy and will sadly be missed.

So for the loss, I found the story. Sounds like he was well respected by his fellow LEO's. So sad for his Young family.

I rarely post here, as I just enjoy looking at the art that many of you folks make. Like many in the Arizona 1911 community, I knew John from his love of 1911s and Browning Hi-Powers. I had the GREAT fortune of meeting John and having dinner with him several years ago. His love of the 1911 and the BHP were true and he was a darn sharp man and a heck of a smith in his own right.

My coolest memory of John was the first time I met him. When you first go to meet someone, you form a distinct impression of how they might look to you. Living in Phoenix, I expected to meet your "average" white or Hispanic guy with the look of your average white or Hispanic cop. I'll never forget how I must have looked at him ( to him ) when this massively built ( like a damn ROCK!!! ) Asian guys shows up in front of me and says, "Hey, I'm John!".

We talked 1911s, Hi-Powers, work, etc. Over the years, on the net, we commented on each others' projects and always talked about getting together for another burger...but I always had school and the next "ex Mrs. Me" to contend with. Of course he had a wife and kids and his work was, like mine, very demanding. So that next burger just never came around......

Dammit, how I wish I would have made the time....and I wish I could have gotten to know him better.

He was a damn fine man....and he will be missed.

John was a hell of a guy. I first met him about 8 years ago and he struck me as an incredibly giving person. Over the years our interactions were infrequent, but every time he went far out of his way to be helpful and selfless. He never failed to help others in any regard.

I am truly saddened by his passing. He was a rare person indeed.

That really stinks. Never met him but I think I know some guys like him. They put themselves out there for us and risk this kind of thing for society in general, many of whom have no appreciation. Thanks to all of you in that profession and all best wishes for the family and friends.

I did not know of John Hobbs, but I hate to hear stories like this. Far too many people continue to give up far too much and that should never been taken lightly.
My condolences to his young family and to his colleagues & friends.

MEDIA ADVISORY

OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

Date and Time: 04-03-14, approximately 1515 hours

Locations: 4200 W. Bethany Home Road

Report Numbers: 2014-00372473

Victims: 1. Detective John T. Hobbs #5624

Male, 43-years-old

21 years with the Phoenix Police Department

Injuries: Deceased

2. Male, 43-years-old

9 years with the Phoenix Police Department

Injuries: Gunshot wound, critical, but stable condition

Suspects: William Thornton AZ DOC #163120

Male 28-years-old (azcorrections.gov)

Injuries: Deceased

On March 3, 2014, at about 3:15 p.m., Detective John Hobbs, his partner and a third detective, all from the Major Offender Bureau of the Phoenix Police Department were attempting to locate, William Thornton, a violent felon who was believed to have shot a man the week prior, after having been released from prison in January. The detectives spotted Thornton driving a car in the area around 4000 W. Camelback Road. It is believed that Thornton realized he was under surveillance and fled without getting out of his vehicle.

The detectives followed Thornton to 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, where he collided with another vehicle. He got out of his vehicle and fled on foot. As Detective Hobbs and his partner, who was driving their car, pulled up and started to get out of their vehicle, Thornton began to fire at them with a handgun. Thornton was on the passenger side of the detectives’ vehicle and his gunfire struck both Detective Hobbs and his partner. Though mortally wounded and down, Detective John Hobbs returned fire and shot Thornton numerous times. His partner, who was also critically wounded, was unable to return fire at the suspect.

As the shooting was taking place, the third detective who approached from a different direction in an attempt to cut off the suspect, saw Thornton shooting at the other detectives and he also fired at Thornton. Thornton was killed during the gun battle. The third detective then went to the aid of his injured comrades and administered first aid until Fire Department personnel took over and transported the two injured officers to the hospital.

Sadly, Detective John Hobbs a 21 year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department died of his injuries. His partner, a 9 year veteran of the Department is still in the hospital in critical, but stable condition.

There were two individuals in the car that Thornton collided with, including an 83-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Both of those individuals were taken to a local hospital for precautionary measures.

At this time, the thoughts and prayers of the Phoenix Police Department, as well as the entire community are with the families and friends of the detectives involved in this incident. It is asked that the media please respect their privacy.

Thank you,

Sergeant Tommy Thompson

RIP Detective John Hobbs. I purchased a Para/Baer SRP from John back in 2005 or 06, a retired co-worker who knew John advised it was the same man, when it came across the LOD messages I didn't realize or just thought it can't be the same John Hobbs. He was very helpful and a Gentleman. RIP Warrior ! Prayers to his young family and friends.
