A couple months ago I got a hold of a 1950 Commercial Colt. Not a bad price but the gun had some pitting. Well figuring we could clean it up in the shop, I bought it. Problem is if you take the pitting out those nice 50's roll marks go with them.
So, what to do. Build an old school gun that was fairly simple, and looked like a gun that started the "custom" craze. The only thing that is similar to the guns currently being built today is the grip safety. I can't cut the standard safety the way Ted does on the 1* guns, which make them shootable. So, I put a beavertail on this one. This was a fun gun to build.
Everything you need and nothing you don't. Refit Colt barrel and bushing, Colt ring style Commander hammer, and a new long solid trigger. All of the original Colt internals with some stoning and polishing.
A Yost-Bonitz rear sight which may be the best sight picture going including Heinie's and Novak's. They may not look as high speed to some but they are effective. Mild dehorn. The older guns were usually pretty smooth, and a pleasure to shoot.
Ted installed a ramp front sight that looks appropriate on this gun. Cut into the slide and guaranteed not to come loose.
The now often imitated never duplicated Yost lanyard loop main spring housing.
Man I wish they would bring back those old roll marks on a group of Series 70 guns.
Ted keeps a fairly close eye on what I am doing, sooooooooo, this one shoots pretty good also. Ted gives me some advice sometimes designed to sound like a suggestion. I can now tell the difference between a suggestion and a non-compromising suggestion.
