Here are some shots of a Colt Chuck and I did for forum member deltaopwong. He hasn't seen his pistol yet, so you guys are getting a peek before he does. I'll get it in the mail to him within the next few months so he can have it under his tree for Christmas...next year.:p

Chuck did the machining at the owner's request, and it's perfect - a great job. Heck, 'bout all I had to do after that was a little reliability work, fit a barrel, put it together, and kick it out the door.:)

Image

Greider solid trigger, McCormick mag catch and grip safety, EGW slide stop, and a Brown thumb safety - reprofiled. The finish is Enviro-Tech over Mil-Spec Parkerizing.

Image

The Heinie rear sight is dehorned and the ejection port flared and blended. Chuck high cut and serrated the front strap at 20LPI, machined the front grasping grooves, and "ball cut" the recoil spring tunnel.

Image

Chuck serrated the mainspring housing to match the front strap and cut in a flush lanyard loop.

Image

The slide top is flattened and serrated in an arrowhead pattern. A Kart barrel was fit and the ejection port edges were softened.

Image

The barrel is recrowned at 45 degrees, the EGW bushing is recontoured, and the front sight has been profiled and hand serrated at 40 LPI.

Image

The pistol has Cylinder & Slide trigger components and the 80 series parts were retimed. Trigger pull is set at at 4 pounds.

Image

Dehorned for carry...

Image

The magwell got a "subtle", hand filed bevel. The lanyard loop edges were softened to protect the heel of the hand during mag changes.

Hope you enjoyed the photos. Please don't tell deltaopwong his pistol is smeared all over the internet! Thanks for looking.

Best wishes,
Bob

I am very fond of this build, and I keep looking at it again, and again. It is very simple in its appearance. That is to say, it is so greatly understated. Each time I look at it, I am focused on something new. There is a twist on something we've seen before in every picture taken.

I am curious as to how much of this pistol's design was left up to the builders, and what was on the "purchase order".

In addition, Bob, how about a word or two on the finish? I know this is something you've worked with more than a few times, yet many don't have any first hand experience with it.

That looks like it would just melt into the hand.
Mr Worthy is right. There are neat things to be seen from every direction.

That is a good looking finish. Before I read what it was, I thought it was blued, then I thought it was Robar's Roguard.

Simply wonderful guys!

I will add that I look at the individual trees that make up the forest, i.e., the parts that make the whole. In this case I looked at the one part that usually is forgotten about when it comes to aesthetics.

The hammer strut. Specifically the eye(which is visible). On this baby its perfectly formed. On several "high end" guns(not here mind you) I have seen them extremely misshapen.

Thats attention to detail! I'm impressed! 8)

Damian, This would be my 2nd. 1911 done by Bob. When I received my first 1911 (Springfield Operator) back. I couldn't stop staring at it and evertime I picked it up to admire Bob's workmanship, I would find another subtle detail that he had touched up on. Absolutely amazing! This Colt is pretty much what I had envisioned it in the beginning when discussing it with Bob last June. After sending it off to Bob and like most guys, decided to add/change something 'since it's already at the smith and might as well have it done before regretting later on'. I originally had envisioned a more GI look to the Colt (ie. rounded top, no front cocking serrations, no ball cuts). After looking at numerous pictures of custom Colts and Springfields out out there, I found that guys would usually go the extra mile on their Colts (the Colt name still has that certain mystique) and have the extra frame/slide machining and the Springfields were kept more inline with the GI look. At the end, I had Bob add the ball cuts, flatten and serrate the top of slide with the arrowhead pattern and the front cocking serrations to match the rear to my work order. I would like to thank Chuck for doing such a great job on the machine work and the beautiful MSH. I would especially like to thank Bob for all his wonderful work on this Colt on it's entirety and making this project gun a reality. This Colt has everything that I would want in a 1911 and will be my retirement carry gun..Stan

PS - Would next week come already, my hands are getting itchy! Hey, Damian, I guess I can stop eating tuna-fish sandwiches at the moment until I dream up another build for my NRM 1991. At this rate I should have 28 retirement guns before it's over! Oh, by the way the BM M4 HBAR barrel/upper you and Steve turned down and re-assembled for me is still running like a champ!! Stan :D

A friend of mine is friends with Rogers and has a few of his guns. I like his metal work, he produces fine hand guns with real clean lines. I like his and Ned Christiansens, the clean lines of both of these smiths are very unique.

Stan,

Thanks for the kind words. I hope you enjoy them. Oh, and I couldn't help but notice the background. Ummm, (gotta be tactful here) you aren't taking these guns to bed with you, are you?!?

Merry Christmas,
Bob
