I just picked up a new Baer hc TRS yesterday, and I'm interested in possibly putting some genuine ivory grips on it. I'm not sure whether to stay with the slim or go with the full-sized yet, but I am looking for a reputable dealer since I know there is bound to be some crap out there. Any suggestions from you custom makers? Many thanks in advance!

I just purchased a set from Nutmeg Sports and I couldn't be happier. I can't imagine a better looking set. I bought them for a gun that I'm having built, but I thought maybe I would let my Les Baer PII wear them until the custom built was done. Wrong!, the plunger tube is too big on the Baer. I also had bought a set of Spegels for the TRS that I used to own, and had to relieve the grip slightly in order to get that set to fit.
Personally, I don't care much for slim grips, but you have to get what works for you.

My experience with Nutmeg was not good. Poor fit on a pair of stocks for a 1911, Alaimo difficult to work with. Stick with Chesniak.

I have a pair from http://fineturnage.com/custom_grips.php . He is a great person to deal with and makes a fine line of grips. You can contact him direct or see what he has on ebay. Good luck.

The Best Ivory I have ever seen for Colt Autos comes from the shop of Mike Poulin.

Mike owns the original Pre-War templates to make Colt grips and can make them any way you like, although original specs ran from .240-.260, with the goal being .250 thick at the widest point.

I have a set of bark ivory at .240.
They are perfect, and look exactly like original pre-War Colt grips (ie: Correct).

His email is mgpsrjr@aol.com
He has a link on Sam Lisker's Coltautos.com site

His work is very very good and less expensive than many other makers of mediocre quality.

He also has access to many different Colt medallions, pre-and post war.

One good way to tell the good grip makers from the posers is that the good grip makers always drill a relief hole for the medallion all the way through the grips....just like original Colts.

Give him a holler. I have seen the grips by Ajax, Art Jewel, Boone, Chesiak, and Alaimo(nutmeg). these are the best, IMHO.......

I talked to the guy from FIne Turnage a few days ago on the phone and he is heading out to do some knife shows and won't be back in his shop until March from the sounds of it.

I'm going to sic him on a pair of black and gray mammoth tooth grips that'll probably find their way onto the commander that Mr. Brian is building me.

Thanks Anthony,

I have been trying to locate him since I lost all my good stuff on my computer. I have one set and am dead set on having another pair from him. They really dress up my Colt LW Cmdr.

I believe Jason Burton gets ivory from Mike as well. I have two sets, and they are fantastic!

AFAIK, Mike's grips are the closest to the old colt grips.
Boone, Chesiak, and Nutmeg are all too big in the wrong places and overly round in cross section.

Mike owns the original pre-war jigs from Colt to make these grips.
He isn't guessing!

I have four sets of ivory 1911 grips from Mike Poulin, and his prices are better than anyone else in the industry. He makes'em to suit, including mildly-thinned (.230" thick) grips which still include the "ledge" for supporting the plunger tube.

Can someone post pictures of Mike's grips? I'd really like to see them.

Adam,
My photo does not do these grips justice. I have several sets of grips from Mike and they are all the best I have seen. I sent a set to a LTW smith who is working on a gun for me and he said that they were simply the nicest he has seen. Mike is a heck of a nice guy as well.

Jim :)

You said it all. I received a pair from him last week and they are phenomenal. These were for what I refer to as my "Pool Hall Special". This is a Colt .38 Super in Bright Stainless. A "Bark" pair are next for another pistol and then some checkered jobbies for a Commander.

Mike is one of the nicest people I've had the pleasure to work with. It's refreshing.

Hey guys, thanks for posting on this topic. I got hold of Mike and ordered a new pair for my colt lightweight commander stainless XSE mod. Can't wait to get them. Will not be able to use them for another week, going south for vacation.

Mike Poulin did join the LTW group here and I hope he read the topics and comments from all of you who used him in the past. I love the price also.
