Happened upon a Dawson Precision Custom at a show, LN and little shot, if any. One of the only single stack Dawson 1911s I have encountered. I spoke to Dawson, and they were not much help on the details, other than to say they build only one or two a year, and have not done them for a while. The gun is as nice as any custom built 1911 I have owned, and I own some very, very nice 1911s. The slide/frame fit is quite well executed, the internals well finished and obviously a gun hand built like many done by the better smiths at this site. An accurate and reliable shooter as well. Dave

CORRECTION: I just got a friendly note from one of my custom builder freinds giving me a bit of a needle about my note above. What I meant to say was as nice as any semi-custom (i.e. Wilson, Ed Brown) I own, not on the level of a Rogers, Yost, Harrison, etc. The Dawson is a very nice gun, but I like my pure customs better. Still, a little appreciated item. Dave

If you are able to talk to Dave himself at Dawson he could likely tell you anything you want to know about the pistol. He has a very uncanny ability to remember the pistols he builds as well as usually who got them.

I met Dave at the Latin American Championship (IPSC) in 1997 and he's a fun guy to be around in a crazy way. he was still with STI at the time. Super smart, and obviously, a shrewd businessman. Have heard ups and downs about dealing with them but my own experinces, limited, have been good. They sure have a lot of stuff.... I'm sure any gun that has his name on it is going to be good stuff.

I have a 2011 frame pistol he built me and it is incredible. I just wish I had a 1911 frame one built by him also.

I was able to track down the relevant info on this gun. They are no longer building these single stack guns at Dawson. From now on, all of their customs will be on the STI double stack 2011 platforms. The gun I bought is about four years old, and I was told that they never built a whole lot of these single stacks to start with, less than five or ten a year, and only for less than five years total.

Too bad, since I have an affinity for nicely down single stacks, and this one fits the bill. Dave

Hello;

I had Dave make me up a pistol just like the one you have except mine is all blue with s/s accents, I also had them install their D/P light mount along with the light, It is a awesome gun, shoots great, never had a malfuntion.

I have talked to Dave awhile back after they quit making the single stacks, I asked him approx. how many single stacks did they produce, he said approx 100 guns, my gun is serial number 21 and I love it.

Pete

When I got the Yanek, the seller (nice fellow) sent me a few back issues of AMERICAN HANDGUNNER with photos and articles about Yanek. Included in one of the issues from 2001 was a very detailed write up about Dave Dawson and the then-newly built gun which is the subject of this thread (the model, Special Ops, not this particular gun.) This places the 'vintage' of this gun fairly accurately, and has some dynamite photos and details. All in all, the more I shot this gun, the more impressed I am with it, and sorry they stopped building the frame and slide in house and stopped building the model altogehter. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi. Dave
