This is a recently finished Colt custom shop production Series '70 re-issue. The custom effort was to be minimal, consisting of all the must-haves and none of the bling-bling.

Image

It sports smooth ivories with Colt medallions, flat serrated main spring housing, de-horned grip safety modified for a King's Commander hammer, King's thumb safety re-shaped to customer's spec.

Image

The front strap was trued and high-gripped, then serrated at 20 LPI. The trigger is a short Casull.

Image

The barrel bushing is an EGW angle bore. The barrel was flush-crowned with the bushing. The front sight is an MGW. All corners and edges likely to abrade got the carry bevel treatment.

Image
It wears one of Ted's most-excellent retro rear sights. First I've tried and I'm glad I bought extras. These are very nice rear sights. The ejection port has been lowered and lightly fluted.

Image

The mag well is beveled at 60 degrees.

Image

Another view of Yost's retro rear sight, modified King's thumb safety and carry bevel work.

Oh, John...........Stainless with ivories. A classic gun, elegantly done. And you actually said bling-bling. Great work, and it was nice talking to you. The snaps are great. Keep shooting some photos.

I try to work "bling-bling into every conversation. It scores big points with my daughter. Wait 'til she sees that I used "must-have" (as in "this season's fashion must-have") that'll really impress her!

I really enjoyed talking to you too, Steve. I meant to tell you how envious I am of you guys in at Yost-Bonitz. You have somebody to talk to pretty much anytime. And if you piss them off, you can go talk to Lew!

Nice one John! First comes Ted's pistol with the ivory grips, now yours. I'm getting "Ivory Envy." Did those grips come with the Colt medallions or did you add them?

Man that whole gun is “bling-bling”... whatever that might be. I’m diggin’ the thumb safety and lovin’ the blend of the mainspring housing.

Fantastic piece!! :D

John,

Excellent work. I always love a retro/traditional gun, especially one with your attention to detail.

If your customer decides he is an idiot and doesn't want that beauty, I'd be happy to own it.

Ray

John,

Great looking pistol! Makes me wonder if I should have gone with a colt as a base gun for my project instead of a Caspian :?
Maybe I'll have to do both :D

smooth one:
I think you'ld have to replace the stock medallions on those grips with 'spinners' to have them qualify as bling.

Holy sh$t, we have mentioned "bling-bling" and spinners in the same thread. What next?

Just to clarify.
This is "Bling-Bling" as most refer to it.
Image

This is "Bling Bling" on LTW.

I don't know if this clarification was for me or for the benefit of all.

Now be nice, the guy in the middle dresses like Ray Harms. :P

Well as always Mr. Spoon, we aim to please. John Harrison puts together an absolutely fine pistol. Coming from Georgia it would be interesting what his version of "bling bling" is, don't ya think?

Ray, those guys can't afford a pistol like John builds cuz it's made out of real stainless as opposed to the pot metal chains they wear. I think a Z-4 is out of the question.

As long as the spinners are made out of titanium. :)

Woohoo!!! It is done!!!

This is my third John Harrison, and I am really looking forward to this one. Unlike my others, which only see occassional carry duty, this one will be my full-time carry gun. The idea was to take a good base pistol, find the flaws (I carried another bone-stock stainless Series '70 for almost a year), and eliminate the flaws.

Most of the flaws dealt with function. On this pistol, John found out it ejected empties into the head (the twin does not), explaining the ejection port work. The stock pistol was also very hard on cover garments (my wife reminded me of all the holes in my shirts) and on the holster. The Colt hammer and magazine catch/release are not stainless, which explains the King's rowel hammer and a stainless magazine catch. The Colt thumb safety traveled past the fire position and was replaced by a King's safety profiled to be like the factory part. The bushing and crown were needed to make the barrel shoot groups not patterns.

The ivory grips started out as a luxury, but my experience with ivory on another pistol really sold me on the functionality of the material. The grips came from Nutmeg Sports, complete with the inlaid medallions.

Color me happy, and it is NOT for sale.

Sounds like you and John have a great relationship and don't have any trouble getting ideas past each other. John built you one hell of a nice gun. Those are the ones you don't get rid of. Congrats Scott.

Yup, this one deserves a twin. I am really excited about this project and how it has developed. I cannot possibly say enough good things about John and how he approaches a project. He really makes this process a lot of fun.
