John,

It's your decision. Go to http://www.louderthanwords.us and start clicking on all the gunsmith's web sites.

They all have photos of their past work along with prices for each upgrade along with packaged upgrades.

If you want someone else's gun - give it to the smith of your choice and tell him he has carte blanche.

Nice Gun, or should I say, nice grips. I have the Combat Gov't prior to the Special Combat Gov't. I took me six months to settle on the smith I wanted to do the work and fortunately, his list was two years long. I asked him to place me on his list with an initial order, with a caveat that I would be changing some things in the package I decided on. I spent the next year of the waiting time refining what I wanted done to my gun.

I still have four months to wait and am not guaranteed a date yet.

I had a Colt SC, actually two consecutive serial numbers. I only shot one of them, it was very accurate and ran perfect, but I was going to change the beavertail to an Ed Brown, have the safeties slimed up some, have the nickle finish removed and with the frame have it undercut the trigger guard, checker the front strap and have it hardchromed.

I would probably leave this stock...I'd like to pick one up just like this one day.

For a custom, you could always find a well used colt govt, commander, etc and let the smiths here configure it however you want.

I'd leave it alone; there ain't that many of them. I agree with Chriso916-- if ya want a custom piece, scout around for a used 70 series Govt or Commander and have it done up. You can find them in need of rebluing (without much real damage like rusted pitting or metal gouges) and ready for a 'smith's files, millwork and checkering for ~ $750 (with all fees) tops.

There's no reason to take a Special Combat and make it something other than it is; I think you'd be "wasting" money bigtime.

i too vote for leave as is...

if you can afford to...

one of my greatest problems is i cant afford guns to just "keep"...with limited fundage, everything pretty much has to have a purpose...

if that is how you are, I think that you make a sweet two tone base gun..

Well, the Obvious choice would be to send it to me, BUT... :D

I think I would have to leave that one alone, too. It is one of those "on my before I die list" pieces and suitable project guns are not all that expensive.

Your pistol is pretty much as high end as Colt ever made. It sort of typifies Colt's best ever 1911 efforts. I'd be hard pressed to do anything to it. It's just my opinion, but I'd just buy a less expensive basic gun and start my project there.

They are nice for a factory gun. If it were mine I would sell it, find a nice Colt NRM 91A1 and send it to the smith of your choice and commission a true custom.
